Grammage (GSM)
The weight of paper per square metre (g/m²); the first indicator of thickness and strength.
Grammage is the weight of one square metre of paper in grams (g/m², often written GSM). It gives a first idea of the paper’s stiffness and tear resistance. In protective packaging, grammage alone does not determine protection; shaping, such as a honeycomb texture, and the number of layers are often more decisive.
When buying, assess grammage together with the number of layers: two thin layers can outperform one thick layer. See the guide on grammage and layer count for the method.
