Paper void fill: machine system or manual application?
Machines bring speed but need investment and space; manual application starts at once. The decision depends on shipping volume.

There are two application models in protective paper packaging: systems that form the paper on a machine and ready-made products applied by hand. Machine systems give speed at high volume but require investment, maintenance, electricity and bench space; machine-specific consumables can make changing supplier difficult. RollPad®, Orbiform® and SafePak® are applied by hand: no investment is needed, you start straight away and the line stays flexible.
Decision criteria
| Criterion | Machine system | Manual application (ready-made product) |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Machine investment or rental | None; as soon as the product arrives |
| Speed | Advantageous at high volume | Sufficient at medium volume; fast if the paper is near the bench |
| Space | Room for the machine and the rolls | Cartons or rolls; under the bench |
| Flexibility | Limited to paper suited to the machine | Product and supplier can be changed |
| Maintenance | Service and spare parts | None |
| Downtime risk | The line stops if the machine breaks down | None |
Which volume suits which?
If you pack hundreds of cartons a day and a single type of product, a machine system may be worth considering. If your product range is wide, your volume fluctuates or you have more than one packing point, manual application is often more economical. Some businesses use manual application alongside the machine line in peak periods.
Efficiency in manual application
Packing time depends on keeping the paper close to the bench, within one-handed reach. Orbiform® gains volume when lifted; RollPad® is torn off at the length needed. To choose between them, see the void fill guide.
Decide with samples
Try manual application on your existing line for a day and measure the time per carton; request samples through the quote wizard.
