How to protect pallet loads: edge protectors and honeycomb panels

Protecting pallet loads at the edges, between layers and at the corners in export and long-haul shipping.

1 min readLast updated: Biyopak Packaging

A pallet load is protected by placing cardboard edge protectors on the edges, paper honeycomb panels between layers and securing the load with stretch film and strapping. Edge protectors spread the strapping pressure and prevent edge crush, while honeycomb panels distribute the load evenly between layers. Both are paper-based, so they reduce plastic use in pallet protection.

Where does pallet load damage come from?

  • Edge crush: strapping and stretch film press on the corners of the cartons.
  • Shifting: upper layers move when braking and cornering.
  • Stacking load: pallets on top crush the cartons below.

Cardboard edge protectors

With its multi-layer kraft structure, a cardboard edge protector carries vertical load and takes the strapping pressure instead of the carton corner. Used with stretch film, it reduces load shifting. Thickness, width and length are made to order to suit the pallet height.

Paper honeycomb panels

A paper honeycomb panel forms a light but rigid interlayer thanks to its honeycomb cells. Placed between layers, it distributes the load evenly; used as a top sheet, it spreads the pressure from the pallet above.

Order of application

  1. Stack the cartons neatly on the pallet without overhang.
  2. Place honeycomb panels between layers if needed.
  3. Fit edge protectors to the four vertical edges.
  4. Wrap with stretch film, then apply strapping.

The carton itself

For stacked and exported loads, double-wall corrugated cardboard cartons increase compression strength. When the right carton and paper pallet protection are planned together, less additional void fill is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Shipping and pallets

01Do edge protectors absorb moisture?

They are paper-based; moisture control is recommended in storage and transport.

02Can honeycomb panels be reused?

If undamaged, they can be reused as an interlayer; at end of use they are recycled with paper waste.

03Are custom sizes made?

Yes, edge protectors and honeycomb panels are sized to your requirements.
